500 Words, or Else

Let's have some fun?

I used to do this for fun. Words on a webpage, about basketball or other things, were the first way I really expressed myself on Al Gore's internet. Then it became work.

Radio copy became television copy, which became tech blogs and corporate social media accounts, then marketing emails and materials, and webpages that have enabled me turn writing into a successful career.

But somewhere along the way, the writing became the job, and the fun became other things. Things I'm sure will get mentioned on these pages going forward, but that’s for another week when I’m short on words.

I've missed the writing for fun part, which is what I’m trying to say, and that's why we're here. I love a good New Year's resolution, and this year I want to keep a blog. As the name implies, I'm holding myself to at least 500 words every week. Like all New Year's resolutions, it's a goal, not a requirement. So we'll see how this goes, and my promise is that if it ever stops being fun, this page will disappear.

I plan to use this space to talk about things I've seen, heard, tasted, or otherwise experienced throughout the year. There's no readership goal. No drive to get an email list to a certain number. Just collecting and sharing thoughts.

So if anyone actually reads this, mahalo! And get used to this format. A bit of a spiel followed by some of those things previously mentioned. Or maybe it'll change. Who knows what the future holds? If there's one thing I've learned since those old basketball blogs, it's that I sure can't tell the future.

Words of the Week

“A hobby is something creative that’s just for you. You don’t try to make money or get famous off of it, you just do it because it makes you happy. A hobby is something that gives but doesn’t take.”

Movie of the Week

F1: The Movie

I'm so sorry I slept on you so long, Brad Pitt Does Top Gun On Land. There are a lot of ways to describe a good movie. "It moved me", or "I would go see it again right now", or "Well butter my but and call me a biscuit, that's some good cinema." But this one? This one ripped. Front to back, beginning to end, you feel like you're in a fast car around hot people with unlimited disposable income. At one time luxurious and also greasy and grimy, I say this as someone who isn't even into F1, this is well worth your time on a cold afternoon.

This is Ollie, my in-laws' 5-month-old kitten. Ollie is a great hang, right up until the entire house is running around the neighborhood looking for a kitten who is currently asleep in the back of a sock drawer. It's ok, he was just 'eepy.

Tune of the Week

I recently watched Sling Blade for the first time. You're telling me that's the Guitars and Cadillacs guy? Acting his ass off? Shoutout to Dwight Yoakam, and a special shoutout to my wife for not throwing me out of the house after I talked like Sling Blade for 48 hours post-watch.
